The City Council of Graymoor-Devondale has officially updated its long-standing garage and carport regulations to better preserve the charm, character, and curb appeal of our residential community. The revised ordinance—passed in October 2025—modernizes construction standards while ensuring additions remain compatible with the look and feel of our neighborhood.

What’s Changing?

At the heart of the update is a clear goal: keep residential design cohesive while giving homeowners clarity and flexibility about what’s allowed. The ordinance outlines new guidelines for garage size, placement, and the types of materials that maintain our city’s traditional aesthetic.

A Few Key Highlights:

Size Standards: All garages must be no larger than 28 feet wide and 26 feet deep.
Height & Door Rules: Garage doors may be no taller than 8 feet, and overall garage height must stay in proper scale with the home.
Construction Materials: Detached garages must match the residential character of the main home. Materials like brick, stone, and block are allowed—though the city now permits certain metal roofing styles when they match the home’s look.
Placement Requirements: Garages must sit no closer than 2 feet from the side property line and 15 feet from the home, unless attached. Setbacks ensure structures don’t dominate the lot or crowd neighbors.

Why the Update?

Over time, construction materials and styles evolve. The City Council recognized that the previous ordinance didn’t reflect today’s building practices or the needs of homeowners looking to improve their properties. These new standards help maintain neighborhood integrity while allowing for thoughtful modernization.

When Does This Take Effect?

The ordinance became official following its final reading and approval in October 2025.
